Event: Opioid Awareness Workshop

On Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 3:00pm-6:00pm, The Temple of Restoration (125 Pennsylvania Ave, Newark, NJ 07114) will hold a Community Opioid Awareness Workshop & Film Screening. The event is free and open to the public.

The Temple of Restoration (TTOR) was selected to join the EmPowered to End Opioid Use faith-based network by the American Heart Association and the Opioid Response Network to address the increased use of opioid and stimulant use among Black/African Americans and Hispanic/Latinos.

The need to address opioid and substance use in Black and Brown communities is critical. Acclaimed actor Michael K. Williams was found dead in his apartment on September 6, 2021 due to a possible drug overdose. According to the CDC, “Nearly 841,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Over 70% of drug overdose deaths in 2019 involved an opioid. Opioids are substances that work in the nervous system of the body or in specific receptors in the brain to reduce the intensity of pain.

“Overdose deaths involving opioids, including prescription opioids, heroin, and synthetic opioids (like fentanyl), have increased over six times since 1999. Overdoses involving opioids killed nearly 50,000 people in 2019, and nearly 73% of those deaths involved synthetic opioids.”

All are encouraged to join the event, and learn and engage with the community, health professionals and TTOR faith leaders in an important dialogue about faith, science and opioid addiction.
