For more than 100 years, the Urban League of Essex County has worked to create pathways to opportunity for children, families, and communities across Newark and Essex County.
Â
Now, we are preparing to launch one of the most important initiatives in our organization’s history: the Urban League Literacy Center.
Â
We know that literacy is one of the strongest predictors of future success. Yet today, more than 80% of Newark third graders are not reading on grade level.
Â
We believe the community deserves a bold response.
Â
The Literacy Center will become a permanent home for literacy in Newark: a place where children can receive tutoring and support, families can access coaching and literacy plans, parents can become advocates, and the broader community can come together around a shared commitment to educational equity.
Â
I personally invite you to reach out to learn more about the vision and see firsthand what we hope to build. I would love to personally walk you through the site and share details with you.
Â
We believe this project has the potential to transform lives for generations, and I would welcome the opportunity to visit with you personally.
Â
Thank you for all you do for our community.Â
Â
With gratitude,
Vivian Cox Fraser
